It seems that we humans can learn from our cousin, the Bonobo. According to the article BONOBO Sex & Society, by Frans B. M. De Waal, we share more than ninety-eight percent of our genetic profile. “The species is best characterized as female-centered and egalitarian and as one that substitutes sex for aggression.” I can only imagine drive-by’s replaced with gangs engaging in group sex to settle the score. Instead of being jumped in or out, one might be blown in or out… Hmmm.
It seems that the Bonobo is more equal opportunity minded, too. “Unlike humans and chimpanzees, however, hunting in Bonobos is as much a female as a male affair.” Speaking of male, the Bonobo male is only important if his mother was a leader of the group. Think for a moment if Hillary and Bill Clinton had a Charles instead of a Chelsea.
Sex and social behavior in this species is indistinguishable. It serves as peacemaking and appeasement and occurs in many different combinations. Unlike many other wild creatures, the female is the one who migrates to other groups where the male remains in the group of his mother. I’m glad it didn’t keep me grounded near my mother in the hot, humid South. When a female does leave her initial group, sex is used as an introduction to gain acceptance into the new group. I wonder if this would help solve the issue around immigration from Mexico. Sorry guys, this is only for the females.
